I was fortunate enough to be able work with Habitat for Humanity for a couple of days through our work volunteer program here at MAX. Habitat for Humanity raises money through donations and via salvaged home building supplies that they sell at a few different ReStore warehouse locations here in Kansas City. With the money that they raise, they are able to purchase and remodel or sometimes build new homes for community members in need. The days I volunteered I did various tasks that ranged from weed-eating to roofing. And the crews were great to work with! I really liked the way that Habitat for Humanity involves the recipients of the homes in the process; those that receive the homes are generally required to put many hours of work into their home or the homes of other recipients so they are truly invested in the program by the time they receive the keys. In a world that seems to all too often simply dispose of the old and buy new, it was refreshing to work with an organization that embraces recycling as they rejuvenate the community that they live in.
